Paul FLANDRIN (Lyon 1811-Paris 1902).
Cheval dans une écurie (Horse In a Stable).
Canvas signed center left: P. Flandrin
37 x 47 cm (14-1/2 x 18-1/2 in.)
The painting is in a satisfactory state of conservation, still with original canvas. It was painted on a canvas probably having little preparation which explains the visible wefts. The material is fluid and very light.
Student of Ingres like his brothers, Paul Flandrin was among the most talented of the Neo-Classical landscapists. His "portrait" of the horse illustrates however an unknown side of his talent as a painter of animals which recalls that he was a student of the specialist in this genre, Antoine Duclaux.
