A French painter and engraver of Italian origin, Jean-François Raffaëlli was born in Paris in 1850. A pupil of Gérôme at the school of Fine Arts, Raffaëlli began at the Salon in 1870. After dedicating himself to landscapes, he particularly sought to evoke in his canvases scenes of Parisian suburbs, interiors and portraits.
