Jean Jacques Karpff was born in Colmar on February 12, 1770 and died in Versailles on March 24, 1829. According to legend, he arrived in Paris in 1790 and worked in David’s studio. His co-workers found his name impossible to pronounce and nicknamed him Casimir. In 1795, he returned to Colmar where he taught drawing in the new School of Fine Arts and specialized in monochrome portraits. He was selected to execute Empress Josephine’s portrait in Saint Cloud in 1806.
